Three - dimensional Alpha Shapes 1

چکیده
Frequently, data in scientiic computing is in its abstract form a nite point set in space, and it is sometimes useful or required to compute what one might call the \shape" of the set. For that purpose, this paper introduces the formal notion of the family of-shapes of a nite point set in IR 3. Each shape is a well-deened polytope, derived from the Delaunay triangulation of the point set, with a parameter 2 IR controlling the desired level of detail. An algorithm is presented that constructs the entire family of shapes for a given set of size n in time O(n 2), worst case. A robust implementation of the algorithm is discussed and several applications in the area of scientiic computing are mentioned. متن کاملHierarchical Distance-based Aggregation
Approximation is one of the key techniques used in manipulating geometric objects. Aggregation is a form of approximation that joins objects that are likely to be grouped together as a single unit. This can improve efficiency, reduce complexity and generate levels of detail, and has application in rendering, cartography and molecular structure design. In this work, we present a general framewor...
متن کاملPreprint submitted to International Journal of Image and Gaphics STRUCTURE DETECTION FROM A 3D SET OF POINTS WITH ANISOTROPIC ALPHA-SHAPES
We present a method to extract polyhedral structures from a three-dimensional set of points, even if these structures are embedded in a perturbed background. The method is based on a family of affine diagrams which is an extension of the Voronoi diagram. These diagrams, namely anisotropic diagrams, are defined by using a parameterized distance whose unit ball is an ellipsoidal one. The paramete...

متن کاملDAMAGE IDENTIFICATION BY USING MODAL EXPANSION AND TOPOLOGY OPTIMIZATION IN THREE DIMENSIONAL ELASTICITY PROBLEMS
In this paper, topology optimization is utilized for damage detection in three dimensional elasticity problems. In addition, two mode expansion techniques are used to derive unknown modal data from measured data identified by installed sensors. Damages in the model are assumed as reduction of mass and stiffness in the discretized finite elements. The Solid Isotropic Material with Penalization (...
